HUANG JUNBI (1898-1991)/ZHOU WEIRU (BORN 1931)
LOTS 1547-1550 PROPERTY FROM THE QINGXIANG LOU COLLECTION The present owner of the Qingxiang Lou Collection, Zhou Weiru, is an artist, collector, and former student and collaborator of Huang Junbi (1898-1991). Born in Ningbo in 1931, Zhou was acquainted with many celebrated artists at a young age and subsequently studied ink painting, specialising in the subjects of bamboo and orchid with Gu Qingyao (1896-1978) in 1954 and Gao Yihong (1908-1982) since 1957. In 1961, at the time Zhou had learnt painting for seven years, she was introduced to Huang as one of his close students by Feng Bichi (born 1918), who was pursuing her painting studies under the mentorship of Zhang Daqian (1899-1983). The elegance and grace with which Zhou depicted bamboos were much admired and praised by Huang, who also collaborated with her on various occasions. In 1980, Zhou, along with other students of Huang's, held a group exhibition at the Hong Kong City Hall during which the Bamboo (Lot 1549) was exhibited. The painting was an intimate collaboration between master and student despite geographical distance: after Zhou painted the bamboos, the scroll was taken by Shen Weichuang (1918-1995) to Huang in Taiwan, where he finished and inscribed the painting. Shen was the editor-in-chief of the Panorama Magazine and the exhibition was mentioned in the magazine during the time.
