Born in 1957, Yang Chihung was born in Taiwan and moved to the United Sates in 1979. As the first Chinese artist ever to have participated in exhibitions held at MoMA PS1, he has also been accredited with being the 'Outstanding Asian-American Artist'. By achieving a state of total artistic immersion in New York, Yang took his understanding in Eastern culture to the next level. His interests and knowledge are extensive and profound. From Renaissance to early modern art, from contemporary philosophy, literature, music, photography to fashion, Yang constantly explores the complex nature and threads of Western art. Bearing in mind the mission of introducing Western art to Chinese readers, he tirelessly wrote articles discussing New York art scene during his time in the United States.
Yang's publication Modern Art and Trends in 1987 has greatly inspired many young artists in Asia.
After practicing art for almost half a century, Yang's art has experienced six different stages. Eastern Poetics Series started in 2011 - a time when his abstract language had matured. Depicting a inner world of easiness, comfort and power, Yang's art reflects an intriguing interplay of Eastern and Western cultures and art - it transcends the border and boundary. Yang Chihung's new work in 2013 Pushing aside the Cloud is infused with a lively sense of motion akin to the dramatic turbulence caused by storms and atmospheric currents. This pictorial movement is subject to an inner force and centripetal structure and is a result of artist's dexterity and careful considerations of composition. It also fully attests to Yang's dedication and inner strength - a peace of mind that comes from observing life and the universe; and more often than not the artist's own life experiences and reflections thereon. Pushing aside the Cloud is a clear indication of the exquisite language of which Yang focuses as he transforms life experiences and psychological awareness into abstract art. As British scholar John Berger has said: 'All the languages of art have been developed as an attempt to transform the instantaneous into the permanent.'
