Lot Essay

Presenting us with an idyllic village scene of Wonokromo, Surabaya, Indonesia, Adolfs expresses the intimate familiarity he felt within Indonesia. Returning after a sojourn in Europe, Adolfs experienced a renewed fascination and love for the Indonesian countryside.

Afternoon sunlight bathes the painting in warm tones characteristic to the artist's palette as a woman goes about her daily chores. Executed in impressionistic brush strokes, the woman's features are obscured, and she blends seamlessly into her surroundings. Adolfs roots her firmly within her environment in a harmonious meeting between people and land.
