Habituellement réalisé à partir d'une dent de cachalot, ce rare pendentif tongien est sculpté dans un os ou une dent fossile de cétacé. D'après Carlier (in Archipels: Fidji-Tonga-Samoa), ces ornements servaient lors des échanges et notamment de cadeaux destinés à "amadouer les chefs lors de demandes importantes, de mariage ou de guerre".
