Lot Essay

Cornelis Sebille Roos (1753-1819) played a crucial role in the artistic life of the Netherlands in the 19th Century, both as a dealer and as a connoisseur. He served as Inspector of Arts at the Huis ten Bosch in The Hague, but his greatest contribution to his country's cultural life came with his involvement in the foundation of the Rijksmuseum. As one of the new museum's most devoted supporters, and as one of the experts who selected the founding collection, Roos's cultural legacy continues to this day. The present lot includes a letter from one of his descendants, dated 13 July 1888, which gives further details about his life and career. The present drawing seems to be a final preparatory study, probably made from life, for de Lelie's oil portrait of Roos, dating from 1815, which is now in the Rijksmuseum (inv. SK-A-3098).
