Lot Essay

The man shown wearing a tricorn hat in the first drawing in the present lot has some striking physiognomic similarities to a self-portrait of Andriessen, executed at the age of 23 in 1765 (Koninklijk Oudheidkundig Genootschap, Amsterdam, inv. KOG, Atlas Amsterdam, Portretten, portefeuille I; image from the RKD).
