Lot Essay

The son of a wealthy family, who were somewhat taken aback by his ambition to become an artist, Brondgeest was a pupil of Pieter Gerardus van Os (1776-1839) and Wouter Johannes van Troostwijk (1782-1810). His independent means enabled him to develop a successful parallel career as a dealer and an artist in his native Amsterdam. He also assembled a large collection of his own, which included a large number of 17th Century Dutch works, from which he drew inspiration for his own pictures. He was particularly well-known for his landscapes.
Some of the drawings in the present lot bear a stamp 'D.P. Brondgeest' (see Lugt online, L. 4331).
