A preparatory drawing for a colour lithograph by Paulus Lauters (1806-1875) first published in 1844-45 in Amsterdam by Frans Buffa & Zonen as part of a series of fifty plates titled Gezigten uit Neêrlands Indië, naar de natuur getekeend en beschreven.
Van de Velde was recorded in Indonesia between 1838 and 1846. He started his career as a naval officer and later moved to the Dutch East Indies, where he worked in the hydrographic office in Buitenzorg (now Bogor on the island of Java) from 1840 to 1842. He was later a missionary in Cape Town (from RKD citing Scheen, Lexicon Nederlandse beeldende kunstenaars 1750-1880, 's-Gravenhage, 1981).
