Lot Essay

This study presumably dates from Israels' stay in Paris in 1903-05, where he met fellow-artists Kees van Dongen and Théophile Steinlen. Looking down on the busy Paris streets, he depicted some town views, one including an elegant lady looking down on Rue Clignancourt (private collection, J. Sillevis, Jozef en Isaac Israls, vader en zoon, exh. cat., The Hague, 2008, p. 128, illustrated) comparable to the present drawing.
