Lot Essay
The son, brother and nephew of artists, Frederik van Valckenborch began his studies in the family workshop, before making the obligatory tour of Italy in 1590-92. Shortly after his return to the North, he embarked on a study tour in Southern Germany and Austria, which resulted in numerous studies of mountainous landscapes often executed with coloured washes. They are similar in spirit to the landscapes drawn by artists of the Prague School at the turn of the 17th Century, such as Paulus van Vianen (circa 1570-1613), Roelant Savery (1578-1639) and Pieter Stevens (circa 1567-after 1624; see lot 104), all of whom also refined their landscapes with touches of colour. Although the location shown in the present drawing has not yet been identified, it must be a view in Germany.
Other examples of drawings made on this study tour include the Gebirgige Landschaft am Wolfgangsee in the Landolt collection (Zwiegespräch mit Zeichnungen: Sammlung Landolt, exhib. cat., Zurich, ETH, 2013, no. 57) and the Mountainous landscape with a valley in the P. & N. de Boer Foundation (forthcoming exhibition catalogue, Entre Goltzius et van Gogh. Le goût de P. de Boer, marchand-collectionneur (1896-1974), Paris, Fondation Custodia, 2014-15).
