According to Keyes, this is likely to have been intended as a companion piece to the Skaters on a frozen river, also dated 1619 and formerly in the A. Schwarz collection in Amsterdam, which was sold at Sotheby's, New York, 23 January 2008, lot 174 (Keyes, op. cit., no. D 67).
