Lot Essay

Comparable in composition to a painting of the same subject in the collection of the former Dienst voor 's Rijks Verspreide Kunstvoorwerpen, formerly on loan at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam (Schilderijen tot 1800, Rotterdam, 1962, p. 114, no. 2384; see also R. Oldenbourg, P.P. Rubens: des Meisters Gemälde in 538 Abbildungen, Stuttgart, 1921, p. 456, illustrated p. 17).

The inscription on the verso appears very close to Rubens' own handwriting.
