A study for a picture in Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Dresden (Fig. 1). The naval battle of the Texel took place on 21 August 1673 between the Dutch and the combined English and French fleets and was the last major battle of the Third Anglo-Dutch War. The ship in the centre is the Gouden Leeuw built in 1666 and which was Lieutenant Admiral Cornelis Tromp's flagship at the battle of the Texel.
