As indicated by the invenit on the engraving, this is based on a lost drawing by Govert Flinck (1615-1660). The sitter was the Grand Master of the Order of Saint John (for the Bailiwick of Brandenburg) from 1652. He had earlier served as the Dutch Governor of Brazil (1637-44). Another black-chalk portrait of Johan Maurits by van Dalen II also based on a composition by Flinck is in the Rijksmuseum (inv. RP-T-1898-A-3953), showing the sitter in much the same costume and pose, but wearing a cloak with the Cross of Saint John and bering a sword. This other drawing is also of oval format but shows him three-quarter-length.
