BERLIN, POTSDAM AND THE ATOMIC BOMB

An extremely rare log, prepared by Lieutenant Commander William Rigdon, Truman’s Assistant Naval Aide, of the President’s journey to a conquered Berlin for the Potsdam conference with Stalin and Churchill (soon to be ousted in the General Election). On the return voyage Truman receives the report of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima: “Monday, August 6:…The President and Secretary of State lunched with the crew at 1145… Captain Graham carried him a brief message from the Navy Department informing him that the Japanese port of Hiroshima had been bombed a few hours before, under perfect weather conditions and with no opposition. The results of the bombing were reported to be even more successful than previous tests…had led us to hope for. The President was excited and pleased by this news. Turning to shake Captain Graham’s hand, he said, ‘This is the greatest thing in history.’…As the President left the mess hall with the exciting messages clutched in his hand, the crew cheered and clapped.” RARE.
