2° (433 x 325 mm). Hand-colored lithographic frontispiece and 15 hand-colored lithographic plates. (Some mostly marginal spotting or staining, dampstain to lower flyleaves and verso of last plate.) Publisher's black morocco, front cover with broad floral gilt borders and gilt lettered title, back cover with identical blind-stamped borders, spine in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands, decorated in gilt (hinges broken, joints starting, extremities rubbed.) Provenance: The Warren H. Corning Collection Horticultural Classics (bookplate on pastedown).

FIRST EDITION. Badger was an illustrator with an intuitive feeling for the decorative, as she amply demonstrates in this work. The fine colored frontispiece depicts a bouquet of Azalea, Geranium, Roses, Jasmine and Bretia; other flowers include: Camellia, Begonia, Fuchsias, Cactus, Callia, Poincettia, Passion-Flowers, Roses, Hyacinth, Lily-of-the-Valley, and Tulips. Each flower serves as the subject of a poem which serves as the text for the illustrations. Nissen BBI 56; Bennett p.6.
