2° (341 x 223mm). Engraved title by John Payne, over 2800 woodcut illustrations in text, ornaments and initials. (Lacking blanks ¶1 and 7B6, a few mostly marginal stains, Ddd1 torn in the corner with loss of page number, Ggggg1 with early marginal repair, Zzzzz6 with marginal tear.) Near-contemporary calf, (rebacked, corners renewed, covers rubbed). Provenance: notes in an early hand on fly leaf; Gervas Holmes (bookplate on pastedown); Mary Anne Holmes (ownership inscription on pastedown).
Third edition. This revised and enlarged edition, the second by Thomas Johnson, corrected many of Gerard's errors, added 800 new species and 700 woodcuts. It may be regarded as the most complete edition. Brunet II: 1548; ESTC S122175; Henrey 156; Hunt 230; Nissen BBI 698.
