MATTIOLI, Pietro Andrea (1500-1577). Commentarii in VI. libros Pedacii Dioscoridis Anazarbei de Medica materia. Venice: Felice Valgrisi, 1583.
2 parts in one volume, 8° (348 x 242 mm). Woodcut printer's device on titles and at end, full-page woodcut portrait of Mattioli on b2v, over 1000 large woodcuts in text of plants, fish, animals, a few genre scenes (including farming activities), and distilling apparatus (illustrating De Ratione Distandi Aquas). (Flyleaf torn out and laid in, a few marginal holes or tears, a few corners torn, light browning or staining.) Later leather-backed boards (rubbed and worn). Provenance: Marginal manuscript notes in one old and one more modern hand.
Second enlarged edition, with the full series of the large woodcuts, and containing De Ratione Distillandi Aquas at end. Mattioli wrote a commentary on five books of Dioscorides's De materia medica to accompany his translation of them into Italian in 1544. The commentary quickly became “an encyclopedia of Renaissance pharmacology” (cf. Stillwell, Awakening of Science 450) and in 1565 Mattioli augmented it considerably with fuller notes. The enlarged edition, here reprinted, is therefore considered the most complete. New animal woodcuts were produced for the 1565 edition. They are considered “an important advance over the fairly mediocre ones used in Mattioli's earlier works” (Hunt), and the fine, large woodcuts by Giorgio Liberale and Wolfgang Meyerpeck, previously used in the German edition of 1563 and the first enlarged edition in 1565, also appear here. Adams D-675; Cleveland Collections 124 (GC copy this copy); Nissen BBI 1305; Hunt 145; Pritzel 5985.
