2° (380 x 236 mm). Engraved vignette on title, 101 hand-colored woodcut illustrations. (G1 recto and G3 verso blank and not printed, some light mostly marginal staining.) Modern half vellum. Provenance: Joseph Hartmann (owner’s name on front free endpaper).
FIRST EDITION. The 101 hand-colored woodcuts (on 100 sheets) are printed from the original woodblocks from the first edition of Fuchs' De stirpium historia published 1542 by Isingrin in Basel. In the preface Schinz discusses how he obtained the woodblocks for this work and how they were colored in the Zurich orphanage. Cleveland Collections 519; Dunthorne 275; Hunt 640; Nissen BBI 1761; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 10722.
