16 volumes, 8° (241 x 150 mm). 261 hand-colored lithographic or chromolithographic plates (8 folding), 12 lithographic plates. (Most leaves in final 3 volumes with soft vertical crease, some mostly marginal spotting, a few plates with light surface soiling, a few short marginal tears to folding plates, 1873 volume lacking title.) Publisher’s gilt-blocked royal blue cloth, edges uncut (a few hinges starting, extremities slightly rubbed).
FIRST EDITION of this British periodical on fruits and flowers in a uniform contemporary binding and edited by Robert Hogg, John Spencer, Thomas Moore and others. Hogg, a prominent 19th-century pomologist, served as the secretary of the Royal Horticultural Society from 1875 through 1884, and remained on the fruit committee until his death in 1897.
