4° (239 x 173 mm). Somasco's Sagittarius woodcut device on title; 144 woodcuts in text, of which 31 (of 52) are with volvelles, folding table “Canon sexagenarius” at end. (Some volvelles skilfully restored, some parts possibly in facsimile, verso of title and some blank portions of text filled with 19th-century ink marginalia, some light browning and staining.) Later vellum (some soiling).

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE of this beautifully illustrated book. The work presents the 48 maps of the Ptolemaic constellations and shows a beautiful collection of mythological figures. The star positions were taken from Copernicus's catalogue. Many consider this to be the first modern celestial atlas because in the maps Gallucci used a coordinate system and a trapezoidal system of projection that allow the accurate determination of the star positions. Adams G-168; Mortimer Italian 206; Palau 96931; Riccardi I:568.
