Cameron was a Scotsman who became the court architect to Empress Catherine of Russia in 1778. He worked chiefly at the imperial residence, the Palace of Tsarko Selo near St Petersburg. He brought his own interpretation of anglicized Palladianism to his extensive additions to the Royal palace evident in the much lauded Cold Baths and Agate Pavillion. The majority of his work is held in the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg.
