I was first asked to design this unique apartment quite unexpectedly. It was my first commission in New York and I was so pleased that it was to be an apartment that had a resemblance to a London town house, as the apartment was spread over three floors and had a 40 foot garden.
I went on a wonderful journey, my clients and I created a home that was very "New York" and an interior that shared our mutual passion for art and for design. The building's architecture by Herzog & de Meuron was a great inspiration to the scheme. The graffiti gates were a pivotal influence when commissioning Mattia Bonetti to design two armchairs for the Great Room. Mattia was not new to such a commission, he had once done something similar for the late David Whitney. Mattia took great inspiration from the city of New York and this was very evident in the Armoir in the master bedroom; its use of three colours in the gilding had the architectural feel of the NYC Museum of Art and Design.
We commissioned many pieces for this project. By chance we were at Art Basel Miami and discovered an installation piece by the artist Ugo Rondinone - its size was pure perfection which we used to divide the kitchen from the dining spaces. Furthermore Ugo's studio was around the corner from the apartment - so things just fell into place and it was a joy to work on this project. Each piece was carefully selected either from Europe or America, culminating in a curated collection, each piece chosen for its individual beauty, quality, refinement and purpose.
Here you will see an apartment that was and still is for me the embodiment of New York: a carefully edited fusion of the eclectic and the contemporary. A project that will always be dear to my heart.
