'Il n'est pas nécessaire de prêter aux Légendes une attention soutenue pour discerner combien l'esprit de l'Art brut les imprègne. Depuis longtemps Dubuffet est persuadé que c'est aux psychopathes, aux médiums solitaires qu'il faut demander où est la vraie voie de la création de l'art. De les avoir côtoyés de si près, le peintre se sent à leur égard une dette de reconnaissance : les Légendes sont un peu un hommage à tous ceux qui, du fond de leur aliénation, lui ont permis de voir un peu plus clair dans ses aspirations.'
