DEUX GRANDES STATUES DE BODHISATTVA EN BOIS POLYCHROME
CHINE, XVIIEME-XVIIIEME SIECLE
Each bodhisattva is elegantly modelled standing with his head slightly tilted to one side, wearing scarves and a loose flowing dhoti highlighted in soft tones of red, blue and green. The chest is adorned with an elaborate jewelled necklace, and the hair is neatly arranged in a knot. There is a serene expression to the face, with the corners of the lips slightly curved upwards to form a gentle smile ; some damages and losses with the hands missing.

TWO LARGE POLYCHROME WOOD FIGURES OF BODHISATTVAS
CHINA, 17TH-18TH CENTURY

拍品專文

The exquisite elegance of the present bodhisattvas, detailed with intricate folds in the soft flowing robes and scarves, is reminiscent of earlier styles of painted wood sculptures carved in the Tang, Song and Jin dynasties. The facial features of these figures, however, are highly characteristic of sculptures from the 17th-18th centuries, defined by oblique eyes, slender noses and full rounded cheeks. Compare the present lot to a painted stucco figure of a bodhisattva in the Shuangling Temple, Shengping, Shanxi province, dated to the Ming dynasty, illustrated in Zhongguo meishu quanji; diaosu bian 6; Yuan Ming Qing diaosu, Beijing, 1988, p. 66, pl. 70.
