Gilt-finished three-quarter plate lever movement, 15 jewels, bimetallic compensation balance, repousse cuvette representing three men and inscribed Gloria a los Proceres de la Independencia, engine-turned silvered dial, the central zone with two interlocking hands under a bell, all surrounded by a floral motif, chapter ring with Arabic numerals, subsidiary seconds, circular repousse case, the front cover with battle scene and inscribed Batalla de Maipu, the back cover with a general with globe and papers, fort in the background and inscribed General San Martin, engraved band, movement signed and numbered, case numbered, repousse work is signed

The Battle of Maipú

In a historic battle fought in April 1818, South American rebels and Spanish Royalists fought on the south side of Santiago, Chile, during the Chilean War of Independence. José de San Martin was the successful Patriot rebel leader who masterfully overcame the Spanish forces led by General Mariano Osorio. The largest city in Chile won independence with tremendous results. Major Spanish operation in Chile had come to an end, and the united Chilean and Argentine patriots launched a series of attacks against Spanish positions which allowed for the liberation of large parts of Peru from Spanish rule.

José Francisco de San Martín (1778 – 1850)

General San Martin is known as the founder and protector of Peru, appointed this title on July 12th, 1821. Becoming a celebrated Argentine general, he left his country of birth Argentina at just seven years old and travelled to study in Málaga, Spain. After taking part in the Peninsular War in France against Napoleon's army, next aiding the present-day Argentina, the battle of San Lorenzo and commanding the Army of the North during 1814, the then set his strengths on yet more victory. He first established the new army, Army of the Andes, in Cuyo, Argentina, then led them to Chile and was victorious at the Battle of Chacabuco before the Battle of Maipú and through his hard and loyal efforts royalist rule in Chile was abolished. A powerful leader, General San Martin is the national hero of Argentina and symbolizes great force and influence.
