The Henry Graves, Jr. Reference 565J
This 565J is possibly the most important historic examples of this reference to exist. Originally sold to Henry Graves, Jr. in June of 1951, this watch was originally purchased as Mr. Graves' day to day watch for its easy readability and water resistant case. Based on the present condition of this watch, it is clear that Mr. Graves meticulously cared for this wristwatch in the same way he cared for his pocket watches. It is in pristine condition and retains its original sharpness to the bezel and lugs making this a specimen example. Furthermore, this 565J holds the distinction of being one of the last watches that Mr. Graves purchased before his death in 1953.
Henry Graves, Jr. (1868-1953) is a man who needs no introduction within the world of watches. As the most important watch collector in the in the 20th century, he is known for commissioning the most complicated watch ever made at the time, the Graves Supercomplication, and assembling the finest collection of Patek Philippe watches known to the world in the mid-20th century.
The reference 565 is the first large water-resistant watch made by Patek Philippe. Originally launched in 1938 with the caliber 12-120 then later the sweep seconds caliber 12-120 SC. In 1949, the earlier calibers were replaced by the caliber 27 SC, as is found in the presently offered lot. With dials by Stern Freres, cases by Taubert, the 565 has taken a mythic starts as the one of the most desirable and wearable of all vintage watches.
