Lot Essay

Probably the most famous of the great English services of the 18th century, not only for its elaborate design but also as both that design (by leading artist Arthur Devis) and the original invoice for the service, addressed to Leake Okeover Esqre and reading "...from ye Jerusalem Coffee House, Change Alley, a consignment of fifty plates and four large dishes with your arms", survive. See D. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, vol.I, p 398.
