Lot Essay

As noted in a letter dated 10 April 1978, by Barbara Luck, Registrar at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center, Williamsburg, Virginia, Pinney created this study in preparation for a larger watercolor. The final piece, which places the ladies in a bucolic country scene, sold at Sotheby Parke Bernet, New York, 27 April 1978, lot 432.
