Lot Essay

Oliver Calley Esq. of Burderop (b. 1672), was the grandson of William Calley Esq. (1600-1660) who purchased Burderop Park from the Stephen family during the reign of Elizabeth I. William Calley was a steadfast opponent of the royal cause during the Civil War and his signature is attached to the death warrant of Charles I. Calley was forced to forfeit his lands, which were later restored to the family.
