Lot Essay

According to the 1991 sale catalogue, Hofstede de Groot, in a letter to a previous owner to whom he had given the drawing, identified the location depicted in this drawing, and cited a drawing of the same place by Jan van Goyen in Braunschweig for comparison. Saftleven made at least two other drawings of this location, both in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. 4357, 4356; Schultz, op. cit., p. 237, nos. 368-369).
