Lot Essay

Copy of the head of the kneeling beggar in van Dyck's painting, Saint Martin dividing his cloak with a beggar, the two autograph versions of which are at Zaventhem near Brussels and in the Royal Collection. A black chalk preparatory study for the figure of the beggar is at Chatsworth (Vey, op. cit., no. 17), and another copy of his head, with a separate study of the ear is also at Chatsworth (Jaffe 968).
