The case with recumbent hound with eyes moving with the pendulum and the tail rising with the strike, inscribed to the case 'PAZZIO FECIT SEREMISSIMO POLONIARU REGIO JACOBO SOBIESKIA. DN 1689', with silvered hour dial, with silvered filigree cagework to the sides, mock pendulum to the front with repeat inscription to the plate; the movement with ringed pillars and chain fusee time, fixed steel barrel for the strike, pendulum and verge escapement, the bottom plate inscribed 'J. Stoser'
7 ½ in. (19 cm.) high, 7 ¼ in. (18.5 cm.) wide, 4 ½ in. (11.5 cm.) deep

The presentation inscription suggests that this clock was made for Jan III Sobieski (1629-1696), King of Poland.
Purchased from E. Greenberg, New York, 3 May 1965.

This recumbent hound model is from a small group attributed to Augsburg makers by Klaus Maurice (K. Maurice, Die deutsche Räderuhr, Band II, Munich, 1976, pp. 51-52, figs. 330-336b). A further example with maker stamp AMW sold from the collection of Yves Saint Laurent & Pierre Berge, Christie's, Paris, 23-25 February 2009, lot 723. The Pazzio signature almost certainly refers to the date of adaptation to pendulum in 1689.
