'LADY IN FUR COAT' A BRUNO ZACH (1891-1935) COLD-PAINTED BRONZE 'BOUDOIR' FIGURE
Franz Xavier Bergmann (1861-1936), Vienna, was a sculptor who opened and operated his own foundry. The foundry “…specialised in exotic subjects, Arabs at prayer on colourful rugs, in their tents, sitting around the camp-fire, with their camels, in an oasis, a harem or the desert….; and in ‘Salon’ or ‘Boudoir’ bronzes, in which a dancer’s hinged skirt may be raised, her dress flung open…..; Egyptian sarcophagi that open to reveal a nude inside, or similarly ‘naughty’ variations on the Arab subjects.” Victor Arwas, Art Deco Sculpture, Academy Editions, London, 1992, page 247
