Since Medieval Times, French tapestry manufacturers have been active at Aubusson. Local ateliers together with family enterprises have supplied wealthy local patrons. Henry IV's economic protection program, together with a patency in 1665, encouraged development and promoted a royal status. Subjects of contemporary taste depicted in light lively colours were executed. After the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, in 1685, many Calvinist artisans fled the country perpetuating its slow decline in popularity. Aubusson designs, however, have never lost their appeal and have been revived throughtout the centuries.
