Lot Essay

During the 1850s a number of French inspired shapes were introduced at Minton, including the 'Queen's Vase' which took inspiration from an 18th century Sèvres shape. For a pair of celadon-ground vases of this form decorated by Solon see Joan Jones, Minton, the First Two Hundred Years of Design and Production, Shrewsbury, 1993, p. 203. See also the similar vase decorated by Lawrence Birks sold at Christie's, New York on 11 April 2007, lot 288.
