A GROUP OF ENGLISH ABOLITIONIST POTTERY AND PORCELAIN
CIRCA 1800-1870
Comprising: a large creamware jug with inscription 'AM I NOT A MAN AND A BROTHER' beside an image of a chained slave, also with Masonic design and inscription to one side and 'JACK SPRITSAIL'S FROLIC' to the other; a smaller lustre jug with similar abolitionist design and printed to the other side with a verse extolling the equality of men; a transfer printed loving cup with 'WILBERFORCE' written above an image of a freed slave, inscribed to the reverse in gilt lettering as a birthday gift to 'Riley' of Wood Lane and dated 1870; a sugar bowl, cover and stand and a small dish decorated with images of slaves; two coffee cups, one with scene of a slave being granted freedom and the other with a scene of a slave auction and two Ridgway stoneware jugs relief-moulded with scenes of a slave auction; together with a pearlware jug inscribed 'Good ale kept here'
