Lot Essay

Romney’s portrait of the Mohawk political and military leader, the grandson of the ‘Indian King’ Sa Ga Yeath Qua Pieth Tow, was painted during Brant’s first trip to England in 1775-76. The portrait is in the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa.
