HOVENDEN WALKER (1656-1728)

A Journal or Full Account of the Late Expedition to Canada. London: D. Browne, W. Mears, G. Strahan, 1720. 8° (203 x 120mm). (Title browned at margins, final leaf browned, minor spots and stains.) Contemporary calf, ruled in gilt (rubbed, label broken off). Provenance: Philip, Earl of Hardwicke (armorial bookplate).

FIRST EDITION of Walker’s apologia for a naval expedition in Canadian waters that fatally miscarried. On 3 April 1711, he was made commander-in-chief of a large fleet which sailed from Boston for the St. Lawrence with the secret aim of conquering New France. Unfortunately, his basic inability to stay on course meant that, before encountering any enemy other than fog, he lost seven transports and one storeship in the mouth of the river; 740 out of 1,390 soldiers (including 35 women attached to the regiments) and some 150 sailors died, either through drowning or exposure on the shore, and the expedition had to be abandoned. Sabin 101050

A letter from a West-India merchant to a gentleman at Tunbridg, concerning that part of the French proposals, which relates to North-America, and particularly Newfoundland. With Some Thoughts on their Offers about our Trade to Spain and the West-Indies: and an abstract of the Assiento. London: printed in the year 1712. 8°(193 x 110mm). (Some browning and spotting.) Red half morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. Goldsmiths’ 4886; Hanson 1607; Sabin 40319.
