Half-title, engraved portrait frontispiece, partly hand-coloured, 2 plates, one folding, and folding letterpress table. (Half-title browned, thumb-soiling affecting title and a few other leaves, frequent spotting to text, occasional creasing, heavy stains to M1.) Contemporary tree calf, flat spine gilt with red morocco label, marbled edges (repair to upper cover, lower joints splitting, light rubbing to extremities).
FIRST EDITION of 'one of the most important accounts of British North America in the late 18th century' (DCB). Patrick Campbell sailed from Scotland to St. John, New Brunswick, travelled on foot to Quebec, then up the St. Lawrence River to Niagara, through the Genesee country and Mohawk Valley to Albany, and down the Hudson River to New York and New Jersey. In order to encourage settlers, he describes economic conditions all along his route, commenting on the the various agricultural practices and the progress of industries like shipbuilding, fishing, lumbering, and the fur trade. The Indian way of life is of interest, and he carefully examines the reasons for the eruption of war between the two groups in November 1791. Howes C-101; Sabin 10264; Staton and Tremaine/TPL 636.
