Deak, no.177 (Quebec) (‘In this well-executed landscape by James Wiliam Peachey, the structure of Quebec’s Upper and Lower Towns is readily apparent. The comprehensive view includes a wide sparkling stretch of the St Lawrence River, bordered by a pastoral scene to the left that provides a land balance to the ships tossing gently on the waters. By 1775, when he Americans attempted to take the former French city, about 1,500 houses had been built in the upper and lower settlements. Here they have been carefully delineated to show their size, variety, and cluster formations.’)
