decorated with engraved inscriptions: ‘Mr David Turpie, North Shields / Montreal 10th of June 1839 / Lower Canada British North America / Young Queen God save her’ and the royal cypher ‘VR’ over thistles and a rose, these bordered with two poems, the lozenges on the neck engraved with a moon and stars

Lot Essay

The inscribed poems read: ‘Art thou not dear unto my heart / Ah search that heart & see / That beats not true to thee / Yes thou art dear unto my heart / More clear than tongue can tell / And if I’m guilty of a fault / Tis loving thee too well’ and ‘A little health / A little welth / A little house & Freedom / and at the end a little friend / and little cause to need him’.
