‘Joseph Petit Claire (d. 11 Feb. 1809) was a watch- and clockmaker in Lower Canada from the 1790s until his death. … At least two tall case clocks bear his name on their dials. … Petit Claire and five members of his family lived on Buade Street, Lower Town, Quebec City, from at least 1790. By 1795 he had moved to Rue sous le Fort.” In May 1797 Joseph Petit Claire moved to Montreal from Quebec City and announced his arrival in the 29 May issue of the Montreal Gazette.
JOSEPH PETITCLAIRE [sic] Clock and Watch Maker lately from Quebec, informs his Friends and Public in General that he has taken a House in St Francois Street, facing Mr Blondeau, where he will repair and clean Clocks and Watches in the best manner, and exercise all other branches of his profession on the most reasonable terms – Old Gold and Silver bought or exchanged – Also Good Watches for Sale.
‘…It is believed that Joseph Petit Claire was the son of Claude Petit Claire … and Marie-Anne Baron-Lambert … of Quebec City.’
