ALEXANDER HENDERSON (1831-1913).
Snow and Flood after Great Storms of 1869. Montreal: [1870?]. Small 4º (173 x 141mm). Letterpress title and 17 (of 18) mounted albumen prints by Henderson. (A few images affected by scattered grey specks, mounts browned and soiled, title spotted.) Original green cloth, front cover titled in gilt (inner hinges split, leaves disbound).
Born in Scotland, Henderson emigrated to Lower Canada in 1855, and learned photography in Montreal. It was in about 1869 that he dropped portraiture to specialise in landscape photography. He published two small books of views of Montreal, one showing the city in summer, the other winter. As Stanley Triggs comments in DCB: ‘His numerous photographs of city life revealed in street scenes, buildings, and markets are alive with human activity.’ In the present copy 13 (of 14) plates show the city under snow and 4 show it under water, the images remain clear and sharp.
With 4 copies of the New Album of Montreal Views [Montreal, c. 1889], three with the same and one with differing photographic illustrations, gilt decorated red cloth, black cloth spines (one volume worn).
