Lot Essay

John Campbell, 9th Duke of Argyll (1845-1914) was a travel writer and politician who held office as the 4th Governor General of Canada from 1878. Better known by his courtesy title, the Marquess of Lorne, until his succession to the Dukedom of Argyll in 1900. He married in 1871 Queen Victoria’s fourth child, The Princess Louise, who initially joined him in Canada but returned to England two years prior to the end of his term of office in 1883, when he was succeeded by the 5th Marquess of Lansdowne.
