Lot Essay

Emblems of samurai culture, the hawks, each striking a distinctive pose and with eyes painted in gold, are tethered to wood stands with fancy tasseled cords.

Robert Ellsworth displayed this screen in his Manhattan restaurant, the Gibbon.
