Lot Essay

The prime, full-length, seated portrait of Huang Ya Dong (Wang-y-Tong) (b. c. 1753-fl. in England 1770/76) is in the National Trust, Knole, Kent. The present work is after the second version, head and shoulders only, which is now in a private collection (see D. Mannings, Sir Joshua Reynolds: A Complete Catalogue of his Paintings, New Haven and London, 2000, nos. 1828-9).
