Lot Essay

The perched squirrels on the corners of the cresting are a distinctive feature of Irish mirrors. A closely related example possibly from Clanwilliam House, Dublin and by descent now in a private collection is illustrated in Knight of Glin and J.Peill, Irish Furniture, New Haven, 2007, p. 264, fig. 238. Others of virtually the same design include: one sold, The Property of a Lady, Christie's, New York, 22 April 1995, lot 365; another sold Christie's, New York, 8 April 2004, lot 248; and a pair from the Estate of Lillian S. Whitmarsh, sold Parke-Bernet Galleries, 7-8 April 1961, lots 353-354 and subsequently, James Donahue, sold Parke-Bernet, 2-4 November 1967, lot 582.
