Lot Essay

The table features unusual low relief decoration imitating English giltwood examples from the period carved in gesso. This type of carving can be seen on Chinese export chairs of a pattern illustrated in C. L. Crossman, The Decorative Arts of the China Trade, Woodbridge, 1991, p. 230, pl. 83. Chairs of this model sold recently, such as Christie's, New York, 14-15 April 2011, lot 479 and 7 June 2013, 126.
