Hemisphere exemplifies Abdulnasser Gharem's fearless practice, which consists of highlighting socio-political issues in the Middle East and thereby challenging authority. First shown at Ayyam Gallery DIFC, Dubai in April 2014 as part of Gharem's solo exhibition titled Al Sahwa (The Awakening), Hemisphere is one of the artist's largest works to date.
Lying in the centre of a monochromatic floral mosaic resembling the interior of a mosque, the highly symbolic stamp painting protagonises a crescent-adorned dome split into two colourful halves. While the dome alludes to one of Gharem's earlier works, titled Message/Messenger (2010), its green colour also epitomises Islamic faith and the pivotal role it attributes to peace. Parting the sacred structure is a warrior helmet's nose-guard, transforming the religious imagery into a belligerent one. Delving deeper into symbology, Gharem contrasts Shia and Sunni allegories in each side of Hemisphere, while the title of his artwork acquires a completely new meaning. Hinting at ceaseless separatist conflicts that are diametrically opposed to the precepts of Islam, Gharem represents both actors of the most ancient Islamic schism side by side, tracing the path to a harmonious coexistence.
